Sal Khan on Bringing Technology into the Classroom
From kindergarten math to world history, AP biology, and college level microeconomics and entrepreneurship, Khan Academy presents a truly impressive array of video tutorials. The non-profit organization now boasts millions of users, and has quickly become a major player at the forefront of modern education.
In his TED Talk, “Let’s use video to reinvent education,” founder Sal Khan describes his personal journey with Khan Academy and his vision for the future of education. He took his first step into the world of education as a tutor for his cousins, when he posted videos of himself on Youtube. After witnessing an overwhelmingly positive response, he quit his job as a hedge fund analyst and began creating what became Khan Academy.
He proceeds to talk about how his videos have been incorporated in certain schools. Students would watch the videos first to learn the material, and do practice problems in school, which is where the teachers could help them, instead of having the students sit through classroom lectures. Detailed statistics have also become available to teachers, so they may track the progress of individual students and see which topics they excel at, and which need more time to master.
Personally, I am an avid fan of Sal Khan and Khan Academy. In high school, I struggled in a very challenging math course. Listening to Sal explain Taylor Series and walk through sample questions on differential equations exposed me to the benefits of online teaching. Here I had a teacher who I could pause and rewind if I did not completely understand a concept, without feeling guilty about it. Even this year in college, I found Sal’s videos on microeconomics to be very helpful, to fill in remaining gaps in my understanding.
But let’s zoom out a bit: beyond helping individual students like me who have difficulty in certain courses, Sal’s ultimate objective is to create a “global one-world classroom.” With users from all over the world, of all ages and backgrounds, Sal Khan is already on track to making this vision a reality.
